Fuji Rock JPN

Japan’s most iconic international music festival

Client: 2019 & 2021–2023

Fuji Rock is Japan’s oldest international music festival, held at the Naeba Ski Resort with a yearly lineup of international and Japanese acts.

Design scope

Area lighting · Decorations · Video artworks · On-site Supervision

Design objectives

To give the long walk between stages a distinct atmosphere while keeping it safe in the middle of a mountain forest.

Fuji Rock’s grounds stretch for approximately four kilometres from end to end at Naeba Ski Resort, while the boardwalk between its two largest stages runs for nearly a kilometre. It needed to feel like part of the festival – not simply a route from one place to another. Safety came first, but it could not come at the expense of the atmosphere.

Sun Effects design concept

Atmospheric decorations and playful visual surprises appeared along the way.

Large-scale tree lighting, small projection-mapping animations on the tree trunks and illuminated bulbs created a safe and atmospheric passage. The installation had to withstand the rainy season, heat, humidity and heavy rain – as well as the occasional monkey.
