Oulu is European Capital of Culture 2026. Sun Effects designed, produced and delivered Delta Life, the biggest highlight of the year, staged in the river delta where the city began.

Design objectives
A multidisciplinary script brought to life literally in the middle of a river. Delta Life is based on an original script by Jukka Takalo that brings several art forms together in one performance. The stage needed to be built in the Oulu River delta, where the river meets the Bothnian Bay, on a site with no existing event infrastructure. The event capacity was targeted for 20,000 attendees standing in a park next to the river.
Sun Effects design concept
A city is born in the delta.
Oulu grew up on this exact spot, where ancient trade routes met the sea, and that history is the foundation of the whole concept. Sun Effects designed the artistic concept from ground up so that the stage, the landscape around it, every art form in the script and the people of Oulu came together as one coherent experience. The result celebrated where the city comes from and where it is heading.
